Permission to show yourself a little love

Self-care isn’t necessarily an elaborate ritual that you have to perform every day. Self-care, in its purest form, is giving your body what it needs when it needs it in order to perform at your very best. Knowing what your body needs involves staying tuned in to the subtle signals it gives you throughout the day. This means staying present and checking in with yourself often.

What is self-care?

You know how the flight attendant instructs you to secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others in case of an emergency? Self-care is kind of like that. It is taking care of yourself so you can perform better for everyone else. If you helped everyone else with their masks first, you would pass out and be unable to help as many people as you would if you helped yourself first. Working up to working out

How do you cultivate a fitness mindset? It’s something I really struggle with. I know I should get in some healthy movement every day, I just don’t always want to. I know I’m not alone here.

My problem is that my why isn’t strong enough. Even if I find an activity that I like, fitness is such a low priority for me that I easily get caught up in other things and simply forget to do it. Sometimes I intentionally find things to do to justify skipping the treadmill, trail, or the mat. Working out only works if it is convenient in both time and location.

I don’t think I’m alone in saying that my procrastination wins over my daily workout more often than not. Most of my perspective clients mention a lack of time and sufficient motivation to move their bodies. Their aversion to getting their sweat on every day deters them from starting any health program at all. Their can’t game is strong, same as mine. Continue reading “Working up to working out”

You don’t know it before you know it

Honestly, I could talk about dietary theory until I was blue in the face. I could give you evidence from study after study about how sugar is bad, sleep is good, and meditation can change how you digest and incorporate nutrients. But until you are ready to hear and process that information I will be talking to myself.

People will not change until they are ready to. I could be dying to help you, but if you are not ready for that help I will be nothing more than an irritant in your life. So people like me sit back and watch you chip away at your health one can of Coke and piece of pizza at a time knowing full well the ailments you complain about can be alleviated, or even eliminated, by a few simple changes in your lifestyle.

When I ask my daughter (who is five) what she is going to learn in school today she says, “I don’t know, mom. You don’t know it until you know it.” That same phrase came up for me yesterday while listening to a lecture about food sensitivities and elimination diets. The lecturer (Tom Malterre, MS, CN) said something along the lines of, “People are amazed how good they feel once they eliminate the foods that have been causing them distress. Of course, I had been telling them this, but you don’t know it until you know it.”

Aging is optional

While I was at my kid’s swimming lessons this morning, I noticed an older gentleman, probably in his seventies, swimming laps. He was fit. Probably more fit than I am, and certainly a better swimmer than I am. It made me think, what is age anyway?

David Asprey claims that he will live to be 180+. He believes that, with the right nutrition and other lifestyle factors, he can hack his mind and body and increase his longevity (1). He calls this Biohacking. In his book Head Strong, David addresses many factors that affect aging, most notably mitochondrial function. While I could go into this subject in depth, I’m not going to today, because it’s Saturday and we have tickets to the Nutcracker ballet in about an hour. You can pick up a copy of Head Strong and read about it yourself if you are so inclined. Today I will give you a quick little synopsis of anti-aging.

The Importance of a Morning Routine

While your early morning is the tiniest snippet of your day, one could argue that that tiny snippet can make or break you. What you do in the early morning hours sets you up for the entire day ahead. People are fond of saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I would say your morning routine is the most important endeavor of the day. Setting up a morning ritual that creates positivity, gratitude, and high vibrations can be the difference between having a great day or having an off day. It is like calibrating yourself for optimal performance.

The early morning is a great time for self-care practices that often get bumped off the calendar because you get busy later in the day. Instead of leaving self-care to the very end, do it right away in the morning. That’s right, set your alarm a tad earlier than usual and get up without pushing the snooze button. Not a morning person? I thought I wasn’t either. It turns out, I get my best writing done early in the morning. Get up and get going for yourself. Show up for you!

Love Over Fear

Each and every decision we make throughout the day gives us an opportunity to choose love or fear. Take a minute to visualize each emotion. Imagine what it feels like to live with love. Bring that feeling in and let it live inside you for a moment. Breathe into it and notice how it feels. For me, this feels like snuggling into a big, puffy blanket. I imagine feeling comforted, insulated from negativity, soft, and willing to share the best version of myself. Now imagine what it feels like to live in fear. Let it permeate each cell and notice how it feels. I imagine a hard, sharp, immovable force, like a large sword, slicing through and shattering my peace. Suddenly fear is in control, and it is not comfortable. Which would you rather live with? We have the choice every minute of every day to live from a place of love or a place of fear. After visualizing both, which would you choose?
